Recycling by Mechanical and Biological Treatment (MBT)

MBT is a general term covering a range of sorting and processing activities aimed at both recycling and reducing the putrescibility of waste. At Levenseat we have an MBT plant which processes household waste. The mechanical process extracts both ferrous and non-ferrous metals for recycling and an organic fraction for composting. The biological process is in-vessel composting using forced aeration.

Although the compost produced is not of sufficient quality to permit its general application to land (due to contamination from the original mixed waste), it is usable as a landfill engineering material and the composting processes substantially reduces the potential for production of leachate and landfill gas.
