In-Vessel Composting This is a new development at Levenseat which will trade under a separate name, Levenseat Organics. The new facility is expected to be operational by the end of March 2008. The new plant will compost a range of food wastes and will be compliant with the Animal By-Product Regulations for the treatment of Category 3 animal by-product material. (The Animal By-Product Regulations have been introduced to reduce the risk that wastes containing animal material could be a source of disease in both humans and animals. Category 3 is considered to pose the lowest such risk.) Composting will take place in three stages: Sterilisation – This will be the in-vessel stage which will last 3 days and take place in horizontal rotating drums, using technology sourced from International Composting Corporation in Canada. This phase will achieve ABPR compliance by raising the temperature of the composting mass to minimum required levels and for minimum periods. Stabilisation – The phase continues the composting process using forced aeration of the compost mass to accelerate the process and minimise odours Maturation – This is the final phase in which the biological activity which drives the composting process comes to an end. The compost is then a stable, mature product which, after screening out larger particles, is ready for application as a soil improver and fertiliser. Capacity in this new plant will be 18,000 tonnes pa. |
